Completed during study at the Art Students League in New York, these mixed-media constructions utilize Hans Hoffmann’s “push and pull” technique wherein elements simultaneously emerge and recede to create space and depth.
I am interested in colour relationships and the tension created where two elements meet to form patterns. Dominant reds, blues and blacks recall the abstract orthogonal compositions of Mondrian, while usage of torn scraps of advertisements and posters is reminiscent of the 1960s Arte Povera movement, which sought to create a new artistic language through the use of “everyday” materials.
I use found materials sourced from various neighbourhoods throughout New York City as a means of reflecting, and tangibly interacting with, the vibrant urban fabrics of such communities. Thus, the process becomes both contextual and physical.
